From Survival to Mastery: Why Kompul

Survive Backpacking

A note on why Kompul exists, and what 19 October 2025 actually looked like.

Nota de campo de 2025. Un despacho personal, en otro registro que los protocolos.

Desk day. A note on why Kompul exists, from the day we opened it.

Kompul did not start in a meeting room. It started on the road, in the middle of putting a life back together.

Survive Backpacking began as a log. I needed a place to write the walk back after a major financial loss. The notes were mine. Then the job grew. I wanted tools so people do not have to sit in that kind of uncertainty with nothing in their hands.

Before the doors opened

The build started quietly in August 2025, while the Survive Backpacking site was still going up. We stayed on it until 19 October 2025. That is the day Kompul went live.

It was also my 40th birthday. There was no party, and no day off. We spent it making sure the infrastructure would hold for the people who showed up. The tiredness was real. The work still had to ship.

The next day, a serious outage took the systems down. The first real test arrived immediately. A grip on your money includes watching the tools that hold it, including the morning after you launch.

Why the name

Kompul means "summit" in Khmer. That is the point of the name. Survive Backpacking is the field notes. Kompul is the software beside them.

The notes stay. Beside them, we built software in French, English, and Spanish, to a standard we would trust with our own numbers.

What went into it is not a slide deck. It is years of field habits: discipline learned in the military, and years of managing banking data, pulled into one financial cockpit.

I want that software to work like a mentor. Take a messy pile of figures and hand back a decision you can actually make.

What this changes

If Survive Backpacking is the story of the walk, Kompul is how you run your own.

Your accounts sit in one place, so the projects get your attention instead of the tabs.

Spending is tied back to how you actually live, through four profiles: Survivor, Independent, Dreamer, and Analyst.

Freedom is not a line on a poster. It is what shows up when the discipline is already in the numbers.

The climb is just starting

Kompul comes from the road, and from the stretches that nearly stopped it. We gave up nights, and a birthday, because we know what it costs to lose the thread. This is what that work turned into.

Phase 1 is open at Kompul. Your money, in your hands. The rest of the climb is still ahead.
